What is the Re-Energize Texas Summit about?

The Re-Energize Texas Summit is the largest-ever youth summit in Texas to make Texas a leader in safe, affordable and just energy solutions to climate change, involving hundreds of youth from all over the state, from every walk of life, and from every racial, ethnic, income, ideological, and religious group.

Where is it located and when will it happen?

The conference will take place at the University of Texas – Austin, from February 8 -10, 2008. Don’t wait until the last minute – register now!

What’s the price of admission?

The registration fee is $20, and with the money contributing to our scholarship program, which will allocate funds to young people who need financial assistance to attend the conference.

What does my registration fee include?

The registration fee covers the entire weekend of amazing speakers, panels, workshops, presentations, and a lot more.

Who is speaking?

Mayor of Austin Will Wynn, Mayor of Arlington, Camille Parmesan (IPCC scientist), Jim Hightower, Peter Illyn, Ted Glick, Rev. Lennox Yearwood, and many other leaders in the climate movement from and outside Texas. They will be covering many aspects of climate change including campus solutions, faith and climate, environmental justice and anti-oppression issues, corporate responsibility, the science and politics of climate change and a lot more.

Is housing provided?

No, but we have scholarships and some low-cost options available. Please apply for scholarships online under the Register tab. Low cost options include staying with a host, co-op housing and discounted rates at local hotels. Look under the Housing tab.

What is our game plan?

We are going to make a statement, mobilize, network, learn, teach and push our state to make some real progress on Climate Change.

Will I have to miss school/work?

Probably some. The conference starts late Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday till noon. For some of you, this will entail missing school and/or work. However, this is truly a once in a lifetime event, a real opportunity to change the course of human history. What’s a couple of days of class or work compared to that?

Why should I come?

Because a) you are a youth, and b) you care about human suffering, the environment, the future of humanity, and/or leaving a legacy for your children.

Additionally, we believe that Texas can lead this country towards an ecologically-healthy and just future. We lead the country in greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption. We, however, also lead the nation in non-hydropower renewable energy potential. We have a tremendous opportunity to meet our energy needs with safe, renewable and affordable solutions, yet we are opting for energy choices that lock us into decades of global warming and social injustices. The Re-Energize Texas Summit will be an opportunity for us to build a powerful youth coalition to make Texas a leader in safe, clean and just energy solutions.
