Green Our Legislature

Every 2 years, for just 140 days, the Texas Legislature convenes to write and rewrite the state’s laws. The government in Texas is designed to be small, and the limited meetings of the legislature make it difficult for change to come to Texas quickly.

And so it is that in this period of historic change, ReEnergize Texas finds itself allied with businesses, environmentalists, social justice activists, students, and the many who want to see change realized now. This is our moment, and if we delay it will pass us by.

This Week’s Action: Call Senators in support of SB 541
Key Senators:

Senator Robert Duncan (R-Lubbock) – 512.463.0128
Senator Jane Nelson (R – Denton) – 512.463.0112
Senator Kip Averitt (R – Waco) – 512.463.0122

Talking Points: SB 541 would create incentives for bringing green jobs and green manufacturing to Texas. This bill is about the future of the economy of our state. As the green tech revolution continues to grow and create wealth, we as Texans need to make sure that those opportunities are coming to our state.

The bill has no financial impact on the state, and should be supported by your Senators. As young people entering the job market, we demand that our Legislature do all it can to help these growing industries succeed, and that means supporting SB 541.

This Week’s Lobby Visit:
Monday May 11th 12pm-3pm, meet at Public Citizen, 1303 San Antonio St.
Email TrevorL[at]mail.utexas.edu to RSVP, or just show up

Students already are showing up to the Capitol in Austin every week to lobby legislators on the bills that could make Texas a green economy leader. You can read about some of those bills above and read the students’ stories on our blog.

The real question is, will you be part of the historic movement for change, or will you let it pass you by? Take a look above at the actions you can take and get involved!
